In a nushell: Ionizers can cause more inhaled particles to get stuck in our lungs. Charged particles can also soil room surfaces. In addition, particles that collect on room surfaces can again become airborne. Air Purifier 1 recommends you stay away from any cleaning device which produces charged particles, it is a potential health concern. This is especially important if you suffer from allergies or asthma. Charged particles and ozone, created by "Ionizers" or electronic air cleaners, are two byproducts you should avoid for your health's sake. This is according to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the American Lung Association (ALA). Ionization creates charged particles which stick to our lungs easier. It is also a scientific fact that at concentration at which ozone is not harmful, it is also not capable of breaking down gas molecules.

  

The EPA states, "...ozone is generally ineffective in controlling indoor air pollution" and "Operation of these devices in the presence of Volatile Organic Compunds (VOC's) results in a soup of particles and gases".

  

The ALA states, "Because of the documented negative health impact of ozone, especially for persons with asthma, and the lack of evidence for its ability, at low concentrations, to effectively 'clean' the air, the American Lung Association suggests that ozone generators not be used".

Most other manufacturers overstate air delivery, some state the air delivery without all of the filters, and generally the consumer loses because the air isn't being filtered as needed. Fanless/filterless systems such as ionizers which move between 20-30 cfm of air are far less effective than IQAir systems which have air delivery rates in the 260 cfm range.
